Botox For “Lip Flip”

The difference between fillers and Botox

It is important to keep in mind that fillers and Botox are two absolutely different things, with absolutely different results. To start with, the most basic difference is that Botox is not a filler. While fillers can achieve the lips appear larger by literally making them bigger, Botox relaxes the muscles surrounding the mouth, called “orbicularis oris”, hence it rolls the lip out (flipping), creating the illusion of bigger lips without actually adding volume. Furthermore, Botox wears off far sooner than lip fillers which sometimes is considered as an advantage especially according to those who want to see a trial before deciding to have a longer-lasting treatment.

What is Lip Flip?

Despite lip augmentations usually performed with hyaluronic acid-based fillers just like Juvéderm®, Botox can also be applied to slightly shape up the lips. According to this, Lip Flip is a non-surgical process that adds volume to the lips thus reshaping it, increasing the pink portion of both the lower and upper lips and reducing the distance between the upper lip line and nose. During the process, Botox is precisely injected into the sections of the orbicularis oris to target only the surface layer of the muscle at the side of the lips. The aim of the active ingredient of Botox, botulinum toxin type A, is to relax the muscle fibers enough to flip the lips out without influencing the original function of the muscle. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes, though it is indispensable to get it done by a qualified, experienced professional.

Results

If done perfectly, the treatment doesn’t change the ability of the patients to freely move their lips – that is why it’s crucial to apply the adequate amount of Botox. In order to achieve the required results, patients typically need 10 units (or less) that usually lasts about two to four months. In addition, it generally takes a couple of weeks to see the true results, but luckily, lip flip tends to work faster and appear earlier than other fillers.

Side effects and risks

Although Botox is regarded to be super safe, there are still some side effects and inconveniences patients may experience and should be aware of. These are frequently bruising and swelling, nausea, headache, numbness, rash, difficult swallowing or even fever. Additionally, the biggest risk is if your practitioner uses too much Botox that can significantly impact the function of the mouth, making it difficult to eat, drink, kiss, whistle or even talk.
