Blue for spots, red for repair
The panel’s light-emitting diodes shine visible light at set wavelengths, without heat damage to the skin. Blue light stays near the surface. There it acts on Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium involved in inflamed acne.
Red light works on cells within the skin, a process called photobiomodulation, and may encourage their repair work and collagen production. Your practitioner looks at your skin first, to see whether LED suits it and which colour.
Where it can be used
- Full face
- Half back and shoulders

Your visit
After a cleanse, your practitioner hands you protective eyewear and positions the panel over your face or back, and the light stays on while you rest. It should not hurt. The equipment can feel a little warm, and you leave with skincare and sunscreen on.
- Mention any active skin condition, and any recent laser, peel, microneedling or injectable.
- Little aftercare is needed beyond gentle skincare and keeping your skin well hydrated.
- Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, especially when LED is paired with another treatment.
- After a peel, laser, microneedling or other treatment, follow that treatment’s aftercare.
Is it right for you?
- Have mild to moderate inflammatory acne
- Break out across your upper back or shoulders
- Notice early signs of ageing
- Want help recovering after certain skin treatments
Tell your practitioner about any medication, skincare or condition that makes your skin sensitive to light before you book.
Results
Change comes gradually, over a course of regular sessions. Blue light can settle inflamed breakouts, and red can leave skin looking calmer and healthier.
Results vary with your skin, the colour of light and how often you come. Your practitioner may suggest maintenance sessions.
Cocoon is a licensed medical clinic with eight doctors, including a dermatologist, and you meet yours before anything is booked.

The American Academy of Dermatology notes that blue and red light can treat pimples. Blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and nodules do not respond.
For acne that is persistent, severe or scarring, a consultation with our dermatologist may be the better place to start.
Nothing is injected, and the light does not puncture or remove the skin, so there is nothing to numb.
It bathes much more of your body in red light, with a different focus. This one treats your face or your back and shoulders, in red or blue.
