Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

When we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen and maintain hydration becomes markedly diminished. Coupled with sun exposure and damaging lifestyle choices, our skin takes on further abuse. Non-invasive treatments like Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy have risen in popularity due to its natural result and minimal downtime.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a very natural filler solution, made of your own blood, otherwise known as the “Vampire” lift. This treatment uses your own ‘enriched’ plasma as an advanced anti-aging and healing treatment delivered to the skin in a process similar to mesotherapy.  The secret lies in extracting and increasing the autological factors in your blood.  These autological factors are what your body needs to heal itself. PRP Therapy re-activates the autological factors in your body’s repair system getting your skin to regenerate more efficiently.

Using PRP Therapy as an anti-ageing facial treatment is highly effective.  This natural and safe treatment uses your own blood, which is extracted and enriched (with no chemicals or additives) in an easy and comfortable process and is then re-injected into your face through several ‘meso-type’ tiny injections.  The benefits of this approach are the natural and self-healing effects of regenerated skin, improved skin vitality, improved sun damaged skin, and better skin hydration.

PRP Therapy: Natural Rejuvenation for Skin, Hair, and Healing

As PRP is derived from your own body, similar to stem cells, it can be used safely anywhere you would like rejuvenation of the skin or hair: damaged cells will be renewed and new cells will grow to produce fresh collagen and deep hydration in the skin.

Platelets contain important growth factors that, when secreted, are responsible for:

  • tissue regeneration and rejuvenation
  • increasing collagen production
  • recruiting other cells to the site of injury to assist with healing
  • initiating blood vessel growth
  • inducing cell differentiation which means that all the different cells required for rejuvenation are stimulated
  • bone mineralization i.e. making healthier bones
  • extra cellular matrix formation – this is the connective tissue that holds everything together and gives it shape and form
  • tissue adhesion especially in skin flaps, bone grafts and trauma. This means tissues stick together giving it strength.

How Does PRP Therapy Works?

Prior to treatment a blood sample of 10 – 40 mls is taken from the patient. This blood is immediately placed in the centrifuge for 5 – 8 minutes which spins the blood and separates out the critical part for the treatment. When this process is finished the Plasma will be separated into three layers: (1) platelet poor plasma, (2) red blood cells, and (3) the ‘buffy coat’ (i.e. platelets and white blood cells) from your red blood cells. The concentrated platelets are extracted from the buffy coat layer for use in the treatment. The platelets are injected into the deep dermis or fat layer of the skin. The platelets will then gradually increase collagen formation which can increase skin thickness and overall health of the skin.

An anaesthetic cream is applied to the areas to be treated and then the platelets are injected in using a fine needle and with minimal discomfort.

The areas that are treated include the face, neck, hands and décolletagé . The whole process including re-injecting 2 test tubes of platelets only takes 45 minutes.

Results will not be visible for several weeks and for optimal results, a further treatment every 4-6 weeks is recommended for a total of 3 treatments.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

  • Reducing fine to deep wrinkles
  • Under eye troughs, bags and dark circles
  • Skin lifting
  • Cheek and hand anti-aging
Before – After PRP Treatment

Post Treatment Care

Avoid massaging the treated area for up to 48 hours after treatment. It is advisable that aggressive facials or any heat diffusing treatments like lasers should be avoided for the first month.

What to Expect of PRP Therapy

You can expect minimal swelling, bruising to a varying degree and redness for 12-24 hours. Some clients experience headache. Treated areas would be mildly red and swollen for up to 3 days after treatment. As collagen production will take to build, the best results can be seen after the 6 weeks. Follow up sessions may be needed, up to 3 times per year to maintain the skin’s strength, elasticity and plumpness.

Aftercare Instructions

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is designed to enhance skin tone and texture, tighten skin, and soften lines and pores. To maximize the benefits and ensure a smooth recovery, please follow these aftercare instructions:

Immediate Post-Treatment Care:

  • Ice Application: Apply ice to the treated area for about 20 minutes, three times a day, for the next 48 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Inflammation Management: Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., ibuprofen, aspirin) for the next two weeks, as inflammation is a natural part of the healing process. If you experience discomfort, paracetamol (acetaminophen) can be used for pain relief.
  • Activity Level: Engage in light activities after the injections to help distribute the PRP throughout the tissues and alleviate discomfort.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: Maintain good nutrition and stay hydrated by consuming fresh juices and water to support cellular recovery.
  • Alcohol and Smoking: Avoid alcohol intake and refrain from smoking for the next two weeks, as these can impair healing and diminish treatment results.

Long-Term Skin Protection:

To protect your skin from damage and maintain the results of your PRP treatment, it’s essential to avoid the following:

  • Sun Exposure: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher daily, regardless of sun exposure. After cosmetic treatments, your skin is at a higher risk of photosensitivity, which can lead to discoloration and brown spots. Avoid direct sun exposure and wear high SPF sunscreen every day.
  • Smoking: Do not smoke, as it can negate the benefits of your cosmetic treatments, leading to increased wrinkling, faster aging, and unpredictable results.
  • Stress: Manage stress effectively, as it can cause acne breakouts and make your skin appear dull and aged. Relax and enjoy your rejuvenated appearance.

Activities to Avoid:

  • Excessive Heat & Sweat: Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and intense physical exercise for at least 72 hours.
  • Sun Exposure: Stay out of direct sunlight for a minimum of two weeks. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and use high SPF sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Harsh Skin Products: Avoid skincare products containing retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and Vitamin C for five days post-treatment, as they may cause irritation.
  • Facial Treatments: Do not undergo facials, peels, or exfoliation for at least two weeks post-PRP.

What to Expect:

  • Mild redness, swelling, and a warm sensation similar to a sunburn may occur and typically subside within 24-48 hours.
  • Bruising at the injection sites is normal and may last up to a week. Arnica gel can be applied to help reduce bruising.
  • Temporary dryness or peeling may occur. Moisturize with a gentle, hydrating product containing hyaluronic acid.

Expected Outcomes:

Results from PRP therapy typically begin to appear 3–4 weeks after the treatment session and continue to improve over time. For optimal outcomes, three treatment sessions are generally recommended, spaced 1–2 months apart.

It’s normal to experience some pain and swelling after the procedure, which usually lasts a few days. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office during business hours at +62 811 388 815.

By following these aftercare instructions diligently, you can expect a swift recovery and the best possible results from your PRP treatment.
