Botox Aftercare Guide: What to Do and What to Avoid After Botox®

Your Botox® treatment is complete. Now it’s time to help your skin achieve the best possible results.

Following the correct aftercare instructions can help optimise your treatment outcome and reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. If you’re new to Botox®, you may also find our Botox FAQ helpful. Fortunately, Botox® requires very little downtime, and most patients can return to their normal daily activities shortly after treatment.

At Cocoon Medical Spa Bali, we provide every patient with personalised aftercare instructions. However, this guide covers the most important recommendations to follow after your Botox® appointment.

The First 4 Hours After Botox®

The first few hours after treatment are the most important.

To help Botox® settle into the intended muscles:

  • Do not lie down for at least 4 hours.
  • Avoid bending forward excessively.
  • Do not rub, touch, or massage the treated area.
  • Avoid activities such as yoga, bowling, or tying shoelaces that require prolonged bending.

These precautions help minimise the risk of Botox® migrating into surrounding muscles.

Exercise Your Facial Muscles

For the first few hours after treatment, gently exercise the treated muscles by making normal facial expressions such as:

  • Smiling
  • Frowning
  • Raising your eyebrows
  • Squinting gently

This may help stimulate Botox® binding within the targeted muscles.

Patients who are receiving treatment for Botox for Wrinkles, Masseter Botox, or TMJ Treatment should follow the same aftercare recommendations.

Can I Wear Makeup After Botox®?

Yes, but apply makeup gently.

Use soft brushes or applicators and avoid excessive pressure over the treated areas.

Do not rub or massage the skin during application.

Avoid Facials and Massage for 7 Days

Facials and facial massage should be avoided for at least 7 days following treatment.

This includes:

  • Facial treatments
  • Facial massage
  • Gua Sha
  • Facial sculpting treatments
  • Aggressive skin treatments

These treatments may interfere with the treated muscles during the initial settling period.

Can I Drink Alcohol After Botox®?

It is best to avoid excessive alcohol consumption for the first 24 hours after treatment.

Alcohol may increase bruising and swelling in some patients.

Moderate alcohol consumption after the initial recovery period is generally acceptable.

Can I Fly After Botox®?

Many of our patients receive Botox® while visiting Bali.

In most cases, flying after Botox® is safe. However, we recommend allowing several hours after treatment before boarding a flight whenever possible.

If you are travelling shortly after treatment, discuss your travel plans with your doctor during your consultation.

Can I Swim After Botox®?

Swimming is generally best avoided for the first 24 hours after treatment.

This includes:

  • Swimming pools
  • Ocean swimming
  • Hot springs
  • Spa pools

After 24 hours, most patients can resume normal activities.

When Will I See Results?

Botox® does not work immediately.

Most patients begin to notice changes within:

  • 2 to 3 days after treatment

Full results typically develop within:

  • 10 to 14 days

Patience is important, as the treatment continues to work over the first two weeks.

Why Is My Follow-Up Appointment Important?

A follow-up appointment is recommended approximately 2 to 3 weeks after treatment, particularly for first-time Botox® patients.

This allows your practitioner to:

  • Assess your results
  • Review muscle response
  • Determine whether any adjustments are required
  • Plan future treatments

Follow-up appointments help achieve the most balanced and natural-looking outcome.

Special Information for Lip Treatments

If Botox® has been used around the upper lip, some temporary changes may occur during the first two weeks.

You may notice:

  • Difficulty drinking through a straw
  • Difficulty whistling
  • Minor changes in pronunciation of certain words

These effects are temporary and generally resolve as your muscles adapt.

Say No to Your Skin’s Three Biggest Enemies

1. Sun Exposure

Protecting your skin from UV damage is one of the most important things you can do after any cosmetic treatment.

Apply SPF 40+ daily, even on cloudy days.

After cosmetic procedures, your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight and therefore more prone to pigmentation and sun damage.

To protect your results:

  • Wear sunscreen every day
  • Wear a hat when outdoors
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
  • Seek shade whenever possible

2. Smoking

Smoking accelerates skin ageing and contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

It may also reduce the overall benefits of cosmetic treatments.

For healthier skin and longer-lasting results, avoid smoking whenever possible.

3. Stress

Stress can negatively affect both your skin and overall wellbeing.

Chronic stress may contribute to:

  • Acne breakouts
  • Dull skin
  • Premature ageing
  • Poor sleep quality

Take time to relax, stay hydrated, and enjoy your refreshed appearance.

Possible Side Effects After Botox®

Most side effects are mild and temporary.

Common side effects may include:

  • Mild redness at the injection site
  • Minor swelling
  • Small bruises
  • Tenderness in treated areas

Applying a light cold compress for a few minutes may help reduce redness and swelling.

Less common side effects may include:

  • Temporary headache
  • Mild heaviness in the treated area

Rare side effects may include:

  • Eyebrow drooping
  • Eyelid drooping (ptosis)
  • Double vision
